William Wang Kicks Off UCSB Reads 2022 With Public Lecture On Responsible AI

The talk describes the key challenges and considerations for developing responsible AI systems

The UCSB Reads 2022 series is centered around Ted Chiang's book, "Exhalation"

UCSB Computer Science professor and MMI Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Designs, William Wang, delivered the first public lecture of the 2022 UCSB Reads speaker series with his virtual talk "What is Responsible AI" (view a recording of the talk here).

“The key challenge for building AI and machine learning systems is that when such a system is trained on datasets with limited samples from history, they may gain knowledge from the protected variables (e.g., gender, race, income, etc.), and they are prone to produce biased outputs,” said Wang. “That’s why in addition to accuracy, it is important to conduct research in fair and responsible AI systems, including the definition of fairness, measurement, detection and mitigation of biases in AI systems.”

The talk launched the 2022 UCSB Reads speaker series, with this year's program centered on Ted Chiang's book "Exhalation" and culminating in a free public lecture by the author on May 10th in Campbell Hall. Read more in the full press release by Shelly Leachman at The Current.
