Among the many disruptions and uncertainties brought on by the devastating global health, societal, and financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, finding funding and research opportunities for graduate students strikes especially close to home for UCSB and the Initiative.& Mind & Machine Intelligence faculty member Mary Hegarty has taken the lead addressing graduate students' financial security, and the sudden need for many students to pivot their normal research plans, through a new program, the Multidisciplinary Research on COVID-19 and its Impacts (MRCI) Program, which "provides a $2,000 mini-grant to an individual or team project that explores, analyzes and responds to the COVID-19 pandemic" (The Current).
