Craig Abbey and Miguel Eckstein (Vision & Image Understanding Lab) will join an exciting €3 million collaboration run by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) that brings together leading medical imaging scientists from Dutch universities (Radboud University Medical Center, Netherlands, Principal Investigator, Prof. Ioannis Sechopoulos) and industry to understand and improve the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and radiologists to optimize diagnostic performance and medical outcomes. The Accurate and Intelligent Reading for Earlier breast cancer Detection (aiREAD) project will use AI and other new methods of image analysis to improve how radiologists read breast cancer screening mammograms. Optimal reading of the screening mammograms will result in earlier detection of breast cancer, fewer healthy women recalled due to false alarms, and savings in the costs of healthcare.
